Best Practices – The EP LP
Best Practices is a ridiculously good band from Providence, Rhode Island. Their new album (or whatever the release can be classified as) is called The EP LP and what a perfect title it is. On The EP LP Best Practices charges through 9 songs in a Joyce Manor-ish 12 minutes. It is full of what (Read more…)
Hot Water Music – Exister
Like so many other fans, when I first heard that Hot Water Music was making a new album I was extremely excited. With a legacy like theirs and a still-rabid fan base, Hot Water Music could have simply gone through the motions or just farted into a microphone and people would have still loved it. (Read more…)
The Bouncing Souls – Comet
Comet is a powerful album that rips the curtains off the walls with its crushing palm-muted Les Paul riffs and evokes internal sing-a-longs without even knowing all of its story-like lyrics. But this record also stops to catch its breath amongst the fury. The instrumentation on this release stands out both technically and audibly. Pete (Read more…)
Gunner’s Daughter – Trust Us When We Tell You EP
Last year my friends in Gunner’s Daughter released the hard-charging Trust Us When We Tell You EP and I totally didn’t write about it. I don’t feel bad about it (okay, maybe I do) but I didn’t write about a lot of music in 2011. Trust me when I tell you (see what I did (Read more…)
The Boogers – Let’s Go! Review & Giveaway
On their website, The Boogers claim to be “the world’s most dangerous kids band.” They don’t play death metal so that might not be 100% accurate, but The Boogers do play some of the finest punk rock for kids I’ve ever heard. The band’s 2nd album Let’s Go! is filled with 13 songs of fast (Read more…)
A little band called Boxer
You might not know it but the first band signed by Vagrant Records was Boxer from Boston, Mass. The band’s one and only album, The Hurt Process was produced by none other than Face to Face’s Trever Keith and released by Vagrant on May 5th, 1998. It’s an under-appreciated but masterful slab of post-Lifetime post-hardcore (Read more…)
An incomplete history of Chicago punk rock (vol. 28)
I’m not sure what other “category” to put this post in, so it just sorta haphazardly ends up as part of this series. Just go with it. So on what was the sunny afternoon of December 23, 1997 the three guys in Allister (that’s me on bass, John on guitar, and Tim on drums) went (Read more…)
Mayflower – Second Best Sunsets
So you want to know about a really great band? A band so great they should have been on my year end list last year. Well, the band is called Mayflower and they’re from Syracuse. Their debut full-length, Second Best Sunsets was released last summer by the studs from Kiss Of Death Records their sound (Read more…)
A little band called Plow United
I first heard Plow United in 1996 courtesy of my freshman roommate and became an instant fan of their ramshackle East Coast thrash pop. We played the shit our of their second record Goodnight Sellout on his crappy turntable. So I ended up with both of Plow’s pre-breakup albums and a bunch of their split (Read more…)
