MXPX – On The Cover II
C’mon guys! Does the world really need another MXPX covers EP? Really? The correct answer here is no, we don’t. Even though I’m an MXPX fan and their first covers EP was well and good way back when, On The Cover II just seems superfluous. Seriously, how many punk bands have covered “Vacation” and/or “Fallen (Read more…)
Shook Ones – The Unquotable A.M.H.
In my mind, Seattle’s Shook Ones have always been the world’s greatest Kid Dynamite tribute band despite playing (to my knowledge, at least) zero Kid Dynamite songs, but with their new album The Unquotable A.M.H. the band has moved past that despite their singer still being a dead ringer for Jason Shevchuk. Yeah, Shook Ones (Read more…)
The Maine – Can’t Stop, Won’t Stop
I think I’ve hated on The Maine before (right here) because of their glossy and juvenile ultra-predictable mainstream power-pop lite but I’d be lying if I said that I totally hated their latest album Can’t Stop, Won’t Stop. The songs are catchy even if they are uninspiring. Honestly, this wouldn’t make terrible beach music for (Read more…)
The Sidekicks – Sam 7″
Last year The Sidekicks (from suburban Cleveland) released a killer four song 7” called Sam as a folllow up to their full-length So Long, Soggy Dog and it’s fuckin’ great. It’s that gritty and melodic pop-punk I love that pulls in just enough folk and rootsy flavor to make me compare this to The Gaslight (Read more…)
Review: Lipona – Pigeonholed EP
After the amazing season finale of LOST’s fifth season, I’m pretty much spent. Even so, I can break y’all off a lil’ somthing. Here goes. Last year Tallahassee, Florida’s Lipona released their debut full length Atlas and are now back with a new 5 song EP called Pigeonholed. It is full of the sort of (Read more…)
Review: Scream Hello – Everything Is Always Still Happening
Scream Hello put out a pretty good little EP called Smart & Stupid as a sort of preview for their debut full-length from last year, but unfortunately the album that followed isn’t quite as good. Everything Is Always Still Happening does feature some pretty decent pop-punk tunes as well as some longer and more meandering (Read more…)
Review: The Wonder Years / All Or Nothing – Distances Split 7″
Leave it up to the dudes over at Beartrap (Chuck & Will, we luv ya!) to keep my ears happy cuz I haven’t heard a splilt 7” that’s this good in quite some time. I got the Distances split 7” from The Wonder Years / All Or Nothing and have been spinning the shit out (Read more…)
Review: Bayside – Shudder
Last year I took my (then 2 and a half year old) daughter to a nearby mall to watch a performance from New York City’s Bayside. She hated it so we wandered around the air conditioned mall instead. I wanted to see them again after catching them on the Warped Tour the year before and (Read more…)
Review: Small Arms Dealer – Patron Saint Of Disappointment
On Patron Saint of Disappointment, Small Arms Dealer dishes out dingy, gruff, and melodic punk rock that isn’t terribly original, but that’s not the point. Sure, the band fell off the Latterman tree into the No Idea camp and broke a leg on the way down, but is that such a bad thing? What Small (Read more…)
