This album, 55 Cadillac, the new Andrew W.K. album isn’t exactly fun. It’s just kinda forgettable.

Andrew W.K.’s 2001 album I Get Wet is a simple, primal, fun, and (quite simply) phenomenal album of overproduced chugging pop-metal party anthems. This album, 55 Cadillac, the new Andrew W.K. album isn’t exactly fun. It’s just kinda forgettable. Still, even though there are few albums less essential than this one, I’m glad Andrew W.K. made (and released this). If you didn’t already know, Andrew Wilkes-Krier is actually a classically trained pianist and here on 55 Cadillac he finally lets his listeners know. The problem is that instead of any sort of songs, we are all treated to 40 minutes of (mostly) aimless improvisational piano noodling where Andrew W.K. touches on jazz, rock-n-roll, and classical melodies and structures but basically just fucks around on the piano with no purpose at all. Imagine what a classically trained pianist just screwing around sounds like and now you have no need to hear this. But if you do, listen away (listen below for the most memorable “song” on the album). Me, I’ll listen to “Party Hard” instead. It ain’t brain surgery but (unlike this) it’s memorable.

Wow. This might be my new favorite album of last year. Anachronous is the third full length from the Florida band Tubers, but the first album of theirs that I’ve heard. With little exception, Anachronous is a non-stop barrage of raw and noisy bombastic punk rock. The vocals recklessly howl and scream like a bull in a china shop while the tinny clanging guitars are halfway between angular and jangly. There is an urgency to this album that puts me on the edge of my seat and a melodic side that (almost, but not quite) balances out the band’s harsh and furious discordant skronk. It’s like listening to hot metal searing human flesh… but catchier. There could be a bit more bass in the mix, but your ears will bleed just fine without it. The closest comparison (even though it’s only about half accurate) would be Fugazi, but (really) it’s like if Mission Of Burma joined forces with O Pioneers and was a more punky version of a DC post-punk band from the early 90’s or maybe a little like McLusky. That’s probably a bad comparison as too. Anachronous is out now on No Idea Records.

A few months back I wrote about the L.A. based Abe Vigoda’s full length Skeleton and just how awesome it was. Well, since then the band has also released an EP, Reviver, that is also quite good, but not really the same. The band mostly eschews the mutated indie tropicalia of Skeleton in favor of more swirling guitars and less overtly frantic melodies. It’s the same lo-fi aesthetic except the cassette has been flipped over to the other side and is less Vampire Weekend vs. Black Dice and more JAMC does Boxer. Compared to the joyous squawking and clanking of Skeleton, this seems subdued. The guys also cover Stevie Nicks’ “Wild Heart.” It’s all a bit different, but good.

I don’t think that there’s any question that the dudes in Black Dice are just trying to mess with us. I mean, their newest album Repo is filled with spastic electro-noise that whirrs, pulses, and screeches in an oddly organic way like it’s the soundtrack to a post-apocalyptic dance party. Just imagine an army of those mechanical crickets from Wall-E chirping along to the hum of the expiring grid and malfunctioning electronics. Even though there is little linking the sounds on Repo to anything resembling “dance music,” there are discernible beats that may make you want to move a little before the rest of it freaks you the fuck out. Black Dice is not for everyone, but I’ve always been a sucker for noise and electronic manipulations. That said, even though there are some difficult and almost terrifying moments on Repo, it is still an awesome album and worth a listen (or many).
