Inspector Owl – Inspector Owl
I haven’t really listened to much of anything that could be considered “indie rock” lately, but the new self-titled album from Chicago’s Inspector Owl might just be enough to make me change my ways. The band doles out heavily-layered melodic songs that reference everything from post-this to new-wave that and even classic rock. There’s also (Read more…)
Into It. Over It. – Proper
Putting needle to groove and listening to the latest full-length, Proper, from Into It. Over It. feels almost like curling up in your favorite chair with a warm cup of coffee on a cold and gray Sunday morning… or lounging back with your favorite drink after a long week at a shitty job. That’s sometimes (Read more…)
Joyce Manor – Of All Things I Will Soon Grow Tired
Upon hearing the new Joyce Manor release Of All Things I Will Soon Grow Tired, the first reaction from almost everyone will inevitably be, “That’s it? Where’s the rest of it?” Guaranteed. Every time. It was for me. The “album” clocks in at just a tick over 13 minutes which is almost 6 minutes shorter (Read more…)
A Legacy Almost Lost: The Moped Band
Aaron, Jacob, and Dan are/were friends of mine and played in a band called The Carraways but when that band called it quits in 2001, the three of them formed The Moped Band. Helen Earth Band – Our Own Ghost City
Helen Earth Band is from San Diego and (although they aren’t quite as abrasive as some of their peers and predecessors) they do have more than a little of that city’s angular and mathy post-hardcore sound. The 13 songs on Our Own Ghost City are full of complex rhythms, interlocking guitar lines, and pleasantly melodic (Read more…)
Ted Leo & The Pharmacists – The Brutalist Bricks
I’ve long considered myself a fan of Ted Leo and whatever band he happens to bring around, but it’s really only with his latest album The Brutalist Bricks that I’ve actually realized just how much I like Ted Leo and the Pharmacists. I loved Shake The Sheets from 2004 and liked 2007’s Living With The (Read more…)
Superchunk – Majesty Shredding
As embarrassing and unbelievable as this may sound, the first Superchunk songs I ever listened to intentionally were from last year’s Leaves In The Gutter EP. WTF? I know, right? Somehow my similarly musically inclined wife also missed the boat. What’s wrong with us? From what I’ve heard, it wasn’t any sort of surprise to (Read more…)
