Luckily the music contained within backs ‘em up. The EP begins with some throat-shredding yells on “Rock Bottom Summer” that sound painfully atonal, but over the course of the its 5 songs, Campaign adds enough melody (including the hook on my favorite here, “Best Luck”) that you’ll have no choice but to take notice. It’s a nice juxtaposition of dissonance and melody, really, it is. Campaign isn’t re-inventing the wheel or turning out anything that you haven’t heard before, but they do the gruff-voiced punk rock thing pretty doggone well and add just enough sonically to keep it interesting. It’s not that other bands in this genre aren’t, but somehow Campaign manages to sound really fucking loud on It Likes To Party. Their sound is dense, raucous, and in-your-face. RIYL: Small Brown Bike, Hot Water Music, D4, etc…

It’s gruff but melodic, and dense as shit while retaining clarity. It’s actually quite an achievement to make a record sound like a combination of Motorhead, Hot Water Music, and Converge; you know, riding the line between melodic emo-punk and pea soup thick metallic hardcore, with some late-70’s retro sludge thrown in for good measure. These guys are badass. Of Misery And Toil is heavy without ever getting bogged down or abandoning the fast punk ferocity that paces the album and the vocals are about as primal and intense as you’re likely to find anywhere. Really, what more could anyone ask for in a punk rock album? Of Misery And Toil is out now on No Idea Records and will certainly find on spot on my year-end best-of list.

I’m serious. This album has been playing constantly in my car for the last few weeks (along with their new EP). The songs are short in-your-face bursts of anger and fury. The band is made up of Tony Foresta (of Municipal Waste), Sam Johnson (of New Mexican Disaster Squad, Virgins), Richard “Horsebites” Minino (of New Mexican Disaster Squad, Gatorface, None More Black), and Alex Goldfarb (of New Mexican Disaster Squad, Gatorface, Virgins). Need I say more? Yeah, that’s what I thought.

The band also recently released a 6 song EP called Traditional Failures which contains more of the same Black Flag, Dag Nasty, Descendents influenced awesomeness. It’s available for free download from Kiss Of Death Records or as a sweet 12″ vinyl EP. Fuck yeah, this band rules.

Even so, let me just state that it actually a somewhat entertaining listen. So these guys from Prince Edward Island, Cananda play what I might call bro-core, boys rock, pop-core, or something like that. The EP begins almost as a parody with some grinding almost metallic nu-core stomping and then there’s a sample of the famous Jeff Spicolli line, “I’m so wasted!” That should have been the tipping point that made me turn this off, but I kept listening and what I heard was pretty typical pop-core that isn’t all that far removed from the likes of Four Year Strong or Set Your Goals. Still a lot of what I heard on Out With The Old, In With The Dudes seemed gratuitous and unnecessary. I mean how much can you take of big gang vocals, snotty (and basically terrible) sloppy lead vocals, and slow stomping breakdowns? Perhaps these guys have hardcore in their hearts but it seems as if they might be playing pop punk just to get laid.

It’s too bad because their third (and final) album Escape was released in 2008 and is full of some awesome hardcore pop punk hybrid that reminds me a little of (maybe) Set Your Goals. Others might say it sounds like MXPX meets Strike Anywhere, or maybe something like a way way better version of Autopilot Off. More pop punk than hardcore, Escape is filled with woah’s and propelling fast-paced rhythms and is as catchy as H1N1. Sure, this is fairly derivative but done well enough that it’s easy to get past it. Despite breaking up, the band released three songs on a split 7” with Offsides (a band that features members of No Harm Done but is in no way comparable) in 2009 as well. At least we’ll have the memories, right?

It. fucking. Black. Really, what can I say about this band other than frontman Dr. Dan Yemin should need no introduction to anyone reading this blog, right? Remember bands like Lifetime and Kid Dynamite? Okay then. Surrender (released on Fat Wreck) is the second 7”/digital EP that Paint It Black released in 2009 (the first being Amnesia on Bridge Nine) and aside from the opener “Sacred,” there’s not much melody floating around this four song EP that was produced by Kurt Ballou from Converge. It’s really nothing revolutionary but Yemin and company sound so pissed and these songs are so fucking incendiary and frenetically brutal that you won’t need it to be. Surrender is hardcore the way it was meant to be played and at about seven minutes long, you’ll have no choice but to spin it over and over. And I swear that “Sacred” also features guest vocals from Jason Shevchuk. Can anyone confirm this?

So last year I raved (read the review here) about the debut 7″ from Kingston, Pennsylvania’s Title Fight and the poppy melodic hardcore that filled up the wax. I’m a Midwesterner and this just reeks of Eastern seaboard. Title Fight’s sound is gritty, fast, and makes me long for the days when I was young enough to see Kid Dynamite at the Fireside Bowl on a weeknight and not care. I know it makes me sound old and jaded, but hey, nostalgia can be a good thing. Anyhow, the band is back with a 12-song collection that includes the 3 songs from the Kingston 7″, three new songs (available on their own as a 7″) and (for you math experts) 6 more songs all in under 27 minutes. I said it before and I’ll say it again:

[The Kingston 7"] is a fast and furious blast of guitars, bass, and drums that clocks in at a shade under 7 minutes 30 seconds and begs you to keep flipping the record over and over and over; it’s that good.

So yeah, again, what you’ve got here is some of the best post-Lifetime melodic punk rock I’ve heard this side of Saves The Day. This time around (however) things are a bit less straightfoward, more meandering, more hardcore, and more and, well, better. It’s East Coast punk rock that even my wife (born and raised in Pennsylvania) approves of. Any why not? The Last Thing You Forget is top notch and available from Run For Cover.
