Does an entire covers album full of 90’s alternative radio hits sound like a good idea for a hardcore-influenced pop-punk band? I didn’t think so either, but that’s exactly what Four Year Strong’s latest release, Explains It All is. Bad move space cadet. Now before you judge me, know that this isn’t a tribute, but rather, a band who thinks they can make a mockery of songs that (for the most part) weren’t that great to begin with. You see these are obviously not influences of Four Year Strong. I get that everyone loves a good/funny/well-timed cover song, you know, one cover song here and there. I get it, but this, not so much. For those of us who actually remember when these were the current modern alternative rock songs, Explains It All might be a bit entertaining, but there’s no lasting value to anything on this album. Seriously guys, this joke isn’t funny anymore. It never was. The cover of Nirvana’s “In Bloom” and Smashing Pumpkins’ “Bullet With Butterfly Wings” are horrendous. There are even a few covers here (namely Sugar Ray’s “Fly”) that are even worse than the terrible originals. A few of the songs are marginally worth listening to, but I wouldn’t recommend wading through this crap to find ‘em, so I’ve posted the decent ones below. If I was Four Year Strong, I’d be embarrassed.

Yeah. So I wrote all of the words above and then watched a “making of” Explains It All video on their Myspace page and, fuck, I was laughing and, dammit, I kinda like these guys. I really like Rise Or Die Trying but this is just a little much. I don’t retract my previous statements as much as I just felt like I needed to write some kind of addendum explaining it all.

Anyhow, last year Jeff released the full-length Try To Be Here and has “officially” followed that up (now) with this acoustic EP, Had To Be There. The EP features an acoustic version of “My Star” (originally on Gameface’s stellar 1999 album Every Last Time) that’s got some neato mandolin added, what Jeff called a “back porch” version of “Remember The Time,” and his Floormodel tune “The Reason Why I Still Live Here” done in a way that sounds more fitting for Jeff. “Song For a Princess” is about Jeff’s daughter and a song that (as a father to two girls) makes me smile more than a little and “Let Go” is a better-than-fantastic cover of that Frou Frou song from the movie Garden State. It’s truly amazing just how great a singer, performer, and songwriter Jeff Caudill is. He makes everything sound like gold. Buy his records.

I’m still not sure how that pertains to Wallace’s solo debut, The Road Spit Me Out, but it’s a cool little album full of what sounds like almost vintage sounding folksy old-timey country music that I might picture being played during the less-raucous operating hours of a dusty old saloon. It’s a bit twangy, a bit ragtime, and (overall) very traditional and authentic sounding (what I mean is that it sounds old without sounding artificially so) in a way that’s actually a little creepy. Wallace’s raspy vocals (sounding like a cross between Graham Lindsey and Jack White) are backed by the likes of guitars, pianos, harmonicas, banjos, brass, yearning fiddles, and more. The Road Spit Me Out is a rambling affair where no song really accelerates past a slow honky-tonk trot, and that’s fine with me. His original songs aren’t bad at all, but my favorite moment on the 9 song album was hearing Wallace’s cover of the Michael Nesmith penned song “Different Drum,” which is one of my all-time favorites. And just because, I’ve included a few different versions of the song but remember that “Billy Wallace High School Football Rules!”

Every time I get a message on Twitter or an email from Jeff Caudill I still get a little giddy. He’s such a nice and down to earth “regular” guy, but I’ve been a fan of Gamface (and now his solo stuff) since I was in high school some 13+ years ago so it’s understandable, right? Anyhow, Jeff sent me a copy of his (at least for now) unreleased CD of demos, home recordings, covers, and other miscellaneous tracks and it (as I expected it would be) is great. Caudill has the ability to turn just about any song into his own and his voice is warm and inviting with a slight raspiness when he pushes it. It give me chills. Caudill is an earnest singer/songwriter that (for all his huge talents) might as well be a guy from the neighborhood; the music is comfortable and sounds like it was recorded by an old friend. And while this CD isn’t available commercially, you should certainly pick up Jeff’s last album Try To Be Here and be on the lookout for a Jeff Caudill acoustic EP later this fall. Enjoy the songs below.

Song Up In Her Head is the impressive debut from 18 year-old bluegrass prodigy Sarah Jarosz and I really like it. This isn’t (however) your typical bluegrass record despite the instrumentation and isn’t necessarily what you’d expect from someone this young. Vocally, she’s great and shows she’s a great mandolin and banjo player as well. She sounds more mature than her age would have you think and delivers a collection of wide-ranging-yet-cohesive songs. There’s moments of yearning Appalachian folk harmonies and mountain music, upbeat and melodic nu-grass instrumentals, and even what (at first) might seem to be odd cover songs (The Decemberists’ “Shankill Butchers” and Tom Waits’ “Come On Up To The House”), but it all goes fabulously together. Like I said, I really like Song Up In Her Head which is out now courtesy of the good folks over at Sugar Hill Records.

I’ve considered myself a fan of Steve Earle since before I was even a teenager as I tagged along while my father listened to albums like Guitar Town and The Hard Way. I’ll also be the first to admit that Earle’s had more than a few musical missteps along the way. Even so, his latest album, Townes, is a welcome addition (even if it is a safe one) to his discography. The album is a tribute to the late Townes Van Zandt and features fifteen Van Zandt covers. Earle first met Van Zandt in the early 70’s and has held him in high regard ever since, even naming his first son Justin Townes. So what exactly should you expect on Townes, well, (as mentioned above) it’s Steve Earle playing Townes Van Zandt songs. It isn’t as raw as the material of Earle’s that really resonates with me, but it is good and it is an interesting look at what is apparently one of Earle’s biggest influences. I like it a bunch.

C’mon guys! Does the world really need another MXPX covers EP? Really? The correct answer here is no, we don’t. Even though I’m an MXPX fan and their first covers EP was well and good way back when, On The Cover II just seems superfluous. Seriously, how many punk bands have covered “Vacation” and/or “Fallen Angel?” I’m guessing more than will ever be necessary. Also, here’s another thing, punk bands shouldn’t cover Clash songs. It never works. Even though I’m kinda giving MXPX a bit of a bashing here, for at least a few minutes while listening to On The Cover II I was taken back to my high school days and overcome with nostalgia and (right now) that’s enough for me to give this at least a passing endorsement.

Even so, it is more of a “some of the stuff that’s come across my desk lately” list than an actual planned out and carefully sequenced mix. Even so, I still hope you enjoy. There’s everything ranging from roots rock to metal and folk to sludgy stoner rock. And, yes, “Fake Empire” is a cover of the song from The National.
