I’ve always <del datetime="2010-12-15T01:59:15+00:00">liked</del> loved punk music but these days I’m just as likely to be listening to something that could very well be considered a form of country or folk music as anything else. One band that combines the two is Milwaukee’s .357 String Band. I loved their previous album, Fire & Hail and this new one is no exception. The band’s sound has been described by many as “streetgrass;” a sound I’d define as balls-to-the-wall speedy punk bluegrass. Their newest album, Lightning From The North, is chock full of that fast-paced and hard-driving banjo mountain music. It’s twangy but rough-as-hell, but (surprisingly) some of the best moments on the album are when these guys let up off the throttle and really let the melody shine through rather than just pickin’ at 200 miles per hour. Still, there’s plenty of speed and grace on Lightning From The North and it’s certainly one of my favorites of 2010. Crack open an ice cold PBR, pour yourself another whiskey, and have a listen.

Yeah, you! I like twangy music so fuck off! Now that’s out of the way, let’s talk music. Mandolin player Adam Steffey’s debut for Sugar Hill Records, One More For The Road, is quite a treat to listen to if you like bluegrass and that sort of thing. On the album Steffy is joined by former and current bandmates from Alison Krauss & Union Station, Mountain Heart, and the Dan Tyminski Band. Now I’m not an expert and really can’t tell you anything about any of the bands that Steffey has played with or currently plays with, but I do know that this album is fantastic. There are instrumental tracks, vocal-driven tracks, covers and originals and everything on One More For The Road works together in a way most artists can only dream about. Steffey has been recognized as mandolin player of the year 6 times by the International Bluegrass Music Association and has won multiple Grammy awards. After one listen to One More For The Road, it’s easy to hear why. Again, even though I thoroughly enjoy bluegrass and roots music, I’m not a bluegrass scholar and really don’t know much about the genre. I do (however) know when I hear something I like and this I like.

Song Up In Her Head is the impressive debut from 18 year-old bluegrass prodigy Sarah Jarosz and I really like it.
Song Up In Her Head is the impressive debut from 18 year-old bluegrass prodigy Sarah Jarosz and I really like it. This isn’t (however) your typical bluegrass record despite the instrumentation and isn’t necessarily what you’d expect from someone this young. Vocally, she’s great and shows she’s a great mandolin and banjo player as well. She sounds more mature than her age would have you think and delivers a collection of wide-ranging-yet-cohesive songs. There’s moments of yearning Appalachian folk harmonies and mountain music, upbeat and melodic nu-grass instrumentals, and even what (at first) might seem to be odd cover songs (The Decemberists’ “Shankill Butchers” and Tom Waits’ “Come On Up To The House”), but it all goes fabulously together. Like I said, I really like Song Up In Her Head which is out now courtesy of the good folks over at Sugar Hill Records.

The album features members of the Stringdusters as well as other players and is a blend of the both the traditional and the progressive sides of modern bluegrass. I’ve been digging the album a lot and I’m guessing you might like it too. Get a copy today from Sugar Hill Records.
