It came from the nineties (Vol. 9)

Posted on 3 March 2008 | No Comments

This is a fitting way to start another week off right. Back to work after a long but eventful weekend. Amy, Hailey, and I spent the weekend up in beautiful Minneapolis, Minnesota visiting friends we haven’t seen in quite awhile. We walked around Uptown, went record shopping, watched the kids play, drank some Surly beer, toured the city’s lakes, listened to the Once soundtrack, enjoyed a real happy hour, drank some good bourbon, and more. I’ll definitely have to move the Twin Cities to my short list.

MP3 | Bone Thugs ‘N Harmony – Tha Crossroads
MP3 | Stereo MC’s – Connected
MP3 | Lush – Hypocrite
MP3 | Alice In Chains – Would
MP3 | Gin Blossoms – Hey Jealousy

Let me just tell you that I fuckin’ hate Smash Mouth. But… isn’t “You Get What You Give” just a great song. Every single time I hear that song it gets stuck right between my left temple and my eardrum. Crazy how that works.

MP3 | Aqua – Barbie Girl

Honestly, did you ever think I would post anything from Cher on this blog? No? Neither did I. Stranger things (however) have happened. Amy really likes the Rusted Root song too so I think this will go down as a landmark post in this series. If you want to find the other posts that preceded this one, you can find all of ‘em here, here, here, here, and here.

Here is another “It Came From The Nineties” post. It seems like so long ago, doesn’t it? It was years and years before my wife would have ever probably considered putting on a Shrek puppet show and imitating Eddie Murphy’s Donkey voice (like she is doing right now). Are you looking for any of the first four installments? You can find them here, here, here, and here.

There were some complaints that the last installment of this series featured a bunch of crap and was like a “nightmare.” I’ll readily admit that many of the “hit” songs from the 1990’s were pretty horrible then and are just as bad today. Take it with a grain of salt and laugh as you listen. Just think of it this way; can you do the Macarena dance? Do you know all the words to “Ice Ice Baby?” I do.

MP3 | Screaming Trees – Nearly Lost You
MP3 | White Zombie – Thunder Kiss ’65
MP3 | MC Hammer – U Can’t Touch This

Super Bowl Sunday is here and I really couldn’t care less who wins the game. At the beginning of the season I’m always hopeful that I’ll be re-posting the Super Bowl Shuffle but it wasn’t even close this year. Below are a few more songs from the 1990’s. As always, enjoy.

It came from the nineties (Vol. 1)

Posted on 29 January 2008 | 7 Comments

I guess I could say that I came of age in the 1990’s and the music of that decade is part of me. So I’ve decided to start a new feature here called “It Came From The Nineties” that will feature the songs I grew up with in the 90’s including the good, the bad, the obscure, and the ugly. The main stipulation for all the tracks here are that they were (generally speaking) major or minor hits and they also wouldn’t appear on my iPod in any other context. For example, I could certainly include a My Bloody Valentine song here, but because Loveless is on my iPod, you won’t find anything. Not that I’m only including one hit wonders, but this could easily get out of hand. Rather than the soundtrack to my teenage years, these songs were like the wallpaper. Always there and infiltrating my ears, but never really necessarily my favorites. I’ve got something like 300 songs in mind, so this will be ongoing. Enjoy.

MP3 | 10’000 Maniacs – These Are Days
MP3 | Inspiral Carpets – This Is How It Feels
MP3 | Beck – Where Its At
MP3 | Weezer – Buddy Holly
MP3 | Adina Howard – Freak Like Me
