Review: The Main Drag – Yours As Fast As Mine

The Main Drag - Yours As Fast As MineRemember when you went to art school? After you graduated you thought that the classroom training you internalized during your studies would help you become a famous painter. Think again. Despite the fact that your work was critically acclaimed, I think starving artist is more accurate description of how you ended up.

One hot summer day (however) you accidentally spilled a can of blue paint all over your floor, and instead of simply cleaning it up, you flew into a rage and dumped all your other paint out onto the floor as well. Every single color of the rainbow. It was a mess, but a glorious mess that looked like the best thing Jackson Pollock had ever done. No joke.

Much like that mess you made years ago, Boston’s The Main Drag takes a huge sonic palette and distills in down into something wondrous and amazing on their new album Yours As Fast As Mine. Their charming indie pop covers more territory than a vintage map of the Louisiana Purchase. From swirling folk-pop melodies to glitchy electronica, The Main Drag can do it all. More importantly though, they can do it all very very well. The confluence of different sounds on Yours As Fast As Mine and just how seamless and natural it sounds is pure musical genius, the workings of Pro Tools masters, or (perhaps) both.

If you like any of the following artists you’ll find something you like on Yours As Fast As Mine: The Postal Service, The Arcade Fire, The Notwist, Owen, Modest Mouse, Sufjan Stevens, Andrew Bird, The Flaming Lips, The Go Team, Elliott Smith, Of Montreal, Illinois, John Vanderslice, Death Cab For Cutie, The Shins, Architecture In Helsinki, The Carraways, The Panda Band, Mum, etc…

Simply put, if you like any sort of indie rock at all (and if you don’t, why are you even reading this) you’ll like Yours As Fast As Mine. It is an unexpected find from a great band that you’ll hopefully (and almost certainly) hear much more from in the months and years to come.
