My oh my how fast the time goes. Did you know that Can You See The Sunset From The Southside (this here blog) is officially one year old today? That’s right. I’ve been filling up my little corner of the blogosphere with songs for your listening (dis)pleasure and commentary for an entire year. The question is why?
A lot has changed in the last year. The guy that inspired me to start blogging (Jacob from Cannot Be Trusted) is no longer blogging himself, last October we welcomed a beautiful little baby girl (Hailey) into our family, and the site went through a makeover in November of last year (with another fresh coat of paint only a few months ago). What will the next year bring? There is no way of knowing.
Right now I’m watching a live Pixies performance from their 2004 tour and trying to think of a great way to celebrate the 1 year birthday/anniversary of this blog. Maybe some live Wilco tunes? Maybe something in the spirit of summertime? Yeah, that sounds good.
Just like listening to reggae music (for me at least), listening to country music (not alt-country music) makes me think of places far away from Chicago’s suburban sprawl and just kickin’ back and having a good time. Escapism I guess. And even though this blog is better known for posting stuff like The Blood Brothers, Mission Of Burma, and miscellaneous punk bands, I too have some guilty pleasures. Leave a comment and wish this here little blog a happy birthday.

Happy birthday, Eric! I replied to your email–let me know if you didn’t get. I’ve had some weird email probs lately.
what great birthday music…couldn’t have picked better myself..sometimes the straight ahead countrry tunes are the best
happy b-day, baby. i like the direction your blog is headed. WHAT?
Yay for one year! I love your blog, thanks for being your badass self. AND thanks for being man enough to admit that you listen to some country sometimes. Just yesterday my friend Amanda and I were driving along and some Brooks & Dunn came up on the shuffle. I heartily sang “I SAW THE LIGHT, I’VE BEEN – BAPTIZED, BY THE FIRE IN YOUR TOUCH AND THE FLAME IN YOUR EYES!” She just kind of stared at me.
Happy Birthday !!
And Thanks for the music !
I’m just discovering country and bluegrass music these days… (because I’ve just seen Brokeback Mountain, this great movie !!!)
So I made a personnal “cowboy music” selection you can listen there :

aw yay! happy (late) birthday to one of my favorite blogs!
as for country music, i’m totally old school (hank williams, johnny cash, etc.) but it’s all good!
Happy birthday dude!
What’s more eerie is that July 8th is my real birthday too. Weird.
Well done, and we’re looking forward to many more superb years with ya.
everyone thinks it’s YOUR birthday…it’s his blog’s birthday!
eric’s REAL birthday is on july 21st!
Totally feeling you on the country music summer escapeism business. I have a terrible weakness for ‘I Can’t Be Your Friend Anymore’ by Tim Rushlow. Terrible in that I’m quite capable of listening to it on repeat for ages. Dunno why. I’m pretty respectably indie in most of my tastes but that one just gets me. And happy blog aniversary.
I have enjoyed your posts – keep it up!
those are some pretty mainstream country choices, which is actually a huge problem with the genre. there are sooooooo many great and unsigned or at least underappreciated country artists out there.
try a little hayes carll or jeffrey foucault.
1st: happy b-day
2nd, random: I came across a “history of chicago punk rock” entry the other day thru a link. It was “vol. 7″, or so, I believe. Is there a complete series?
Jswede – Thanks for checking out the site. As for the Chicago Punk Rock series, it is incomplete as of today, but will eventually have upwards of 30 features. Keep checking back for more info.
My favorite such story is discovering Adrienne Rich, my favorite poet, has a weakness for Reba McIntyre. Who knew?
I’m glad that I just happened upon your site. Keep up the good work! Thanks.
