If you are a fan of Chicago punk rock (and punk rock in general) you are almost certainly a fan of Naked Raygun or at least appreciative of their huge influence. That fact is inescapable and impossible not to recognize on former frontman Jeff Pezzati’s post-Raygun band The Bomb’s latest album Speed Is Everything. It’s their 3rd album and first for No Idea. Calling The Bomb simply Pezzati’s band (however) would be selling them short as the band also features bassist Pete Mittler and drummer Mike Soucy (the rhythm section for The Methadones) as well as guitarist Jeff Dean (who also currently plays in Noise By Numbers and Certain People I Know). It’s more melodic and poppier than much of what Raygun did, but Pezzati’s flat vocals are unmistakable. It’s post-pop-punk-something-or-other-core that’s got a classic sound without sounding dated. Some of the lyrics are a bit clumsy but there’s plenty to love here. With infectious melodies, driving rhythms, and at least as many “woah-oh’s” as you’d expect, I like this more than The Bomb’s previous albums, and this (perhaps) could be as good as anything Naked Raygun has ever released. Speed Is Everything was produced by the legendary J. Robbins and features additional vocals from Dan Yemin and Bob Nanna. RIYL: Naked Raygun, Samiam, Dear You, etc…
