Bremerton, WA pop-punk band MxPx has a new album called Secret Weapon due out on Tooth & Nail Records in July, so I thought it might be a good time to revisit the band’s music. It is sometimes hard to believe that MxPx has been around for almost 15 years now. The band was formed when the members were still in high school and sound hasn’t evolved all that much. They play (and always have played) fast, poppy, and melodic punkish tunes that are generally of the non-threatening variety. They are often thrown into the Christian rock category, I think that is a bit of a mistake. Yes, the band subscribes to Christian ideals, but they don’t preach it in their music. It is more about skate rock and girls (IMHO).
I’ve been an MxPx fan for almost as long as they have been a band and I have just about everything they’ve released. And calling MxPx prolific would be a huge understatement. They are prolific almost to a fault. Although the band has grown over the years, they really haven’t progressed much musically or lyrically. I’m fine with that though. Maybe its nostalgia and the familiar predictability I know I can expect from MxPx, but they will always have a place in my music collection.
