Okay. Being the proprietor and lone writer for this blog there is a ton of music that comes across my desk and gets played in my house. One of the few bands that my wife has totally fallen for via that process is this one. Now, there is absolutely zero chance that you won’t like Spanish Gamble if you are a fan of stuff like later-period Hot Water Music and also Leatherface. On their debut full-length as Spanish Gamble, It’s All Coming Down, they sound a lot like those bands but (maybe) with a little more rock & roll influences. In 2006, the band (then known as Dirty Money), moved from New Mexico to where else but Gainesville, Florida. It’s a sound that they seem perfectly at home with now. It’s the usual rough-yet-melodic anthemic punk rock that I (and you too, probably) love. The vocals are more shouted than they are truly gruff and gravelly but the dual guitar attack churns and the rhythm section really pounds. There are definitely fist-pumping sing along moments here, but it isn’t all sunshine and positive rage; there are some darker moments here as well. Overall, it adds up to an album that will be (almost certainly) be on my best albums of the year list. It’s All Coming Down is out now on the continuously awesome Paper + Plastick label.
