Sonic Drive-In has invaded Chicagoland

Chicagoland’s first Sonic Drive-In officially opened for business today in Aurora and I was there. It is conveniently located a mere 5 minutes from my office and also along my route to and from work so when I saw the “NOW OPEN” signs and the long line of cars, I knew it was game time. Now before today, everything I knew about Sonic was due to their goofy TV commercials that have been airing here for years. Luckily two co-workers (let’s call them Jeremy and Clay) grew up in Sonic territory and had been anxiously awaiting this opening since we first heard about it a few months back so I tagged along. As I expected, it was a total clusterfuck of an operation going on there.
We left the office about 11:15 AM and on our way there I asked the guys, “What’s so great about Sonic anyways?” My question was answered with tales of killer cheeseburgers, breakfast toasters, and a million different drink combinations that Sonic (your ultimate drinkstop) boasts. I was told of chili cheese dogs, tots, Ocean Water, and cherry limeades. It was obvious these two guys were excited.
When we arrived at Sonic were greeted by employees directing traffic this way and that. They were looping cars every which way and didn’t seem to even slightly understand how to most efficiently move people through the line. I was hoping for a little more organization and planning for Sonic’s entrance into the 3rd largest market in the US (especially considering that according to one of the guys supposedly directing traffic, Sonic snagged a bunch of their employees at this location from Portillo’s. Even so, for all my complaining we did get back to the office by 12:30 PM and I had my first taste of a sonic cherry limeade.

Sonic is GREAT! Their burgers are the best around — for fast food.
