Chicago’s own Smoking Popes has been one of my favorite bands for almost 15 years now and their newest release It’s Been A Long Day collects all the band’s early 7” records and puts them in one place. Although the album is (I think) out of print, this is essentially the same collection as presented on 1991-1998 except that the tracks from Get Fired have been replaced by a few additional songs (including one of my all time favorite Popes’ tracks “Hang”). It’s not essential but It’s Been A Long Day features the punkest songs the Smoking Popes recorded and their evolution from those times. Now if only I can get my mother to come over and babysit the girls this Friday, maybe the wife and I can go see our beloved Popes in concert.
