I’m in the mood for a little jazz tonight and was inspired by some of the great posts over at Feed Me Good Tunes. First is a version of the classic Christmas tune “Winter Wonderland” by saxophone colossus Sonny Rollins. I give you a great tune from avant-garde pianist Matthew Shipp, and also something from one of the free-jazz pioneers, Cecil Taylor. Closing out the set is organist Jimmy Smith’s souped up rendition of “Jingle Bells.”

MP3 | Cecil Taylor – Luyah! The Glorious Step Looking Ahead!

1 Kurt - 998 days ago You thinking about maybe, like, putting some rock up ever again? I understand you're experiencing a bit of an identity crisis within the blogosphere. I do. But I think a little rock would do you some good. I just listened to the Loved Ones and it did me some good. (Incidentally, I'm convinced that the Loved Ones are the band Allister always wanted to be.) Jazz schmazz. Bring the rock.

Man alive, I haven't listened to Matthew Shipp in ages man. Cheers for the nod and the jazz!

Rock is good, true. Jazz is good, too. When I think of all the sex I've had in my life (not that anyone needed to know), the best times came with a little Rollins (Sonny, not Henry) or some Monk. Although this one girl liked to f*ck with Sepultura loudly in the background.

Don't know what that was all about still, to this very day.

.... yeah.
