Women is not the sort of band name that lends itself to easy Googling but the music on their self-titled debut album is the sort of lo-fi and shoegazey indie rock that’s both hazy and memorable and noisy and melodic. From damn near ambient to catchy Grizzly Bear-esqe harmonies, this is about as good as anything in the genre I’ve heard this year. The album was recorded over four months on ghetto blasters and old tape machines by none other than Chad Van Gaalen. Although this sat in my pile of shit to listen to for awhile, once I hear that folks from Jagjaguwar was re-releasing this record, I should have instantly moved this to the top of the pile. I’ve been listening to this all morning and what you get is distorted clanging, overdriven banging, melodic singing, and skronky guitar chiming. All those elements are present on Women, making the album varied and full of surprises. It’s an astounding racket of blissfully warped psychedelic pop songs that (in total) adds up to an album that is really really good. Oh yeah, the guys in Women are also Canadian.
