Review: Willie Nelson & Wynton Marsalis – Two Men With The Blues

So back just over two years ago, in January of 2007, Jazz at Lincoln Center gave lucky listeners two nights of Willie Nelson and Wynton Marsalis playing some of Willie’s originals as well blues and jazz standards. It may seem like an odd pairing at first; the king of outlaw-country and the jazz maestro are both just Two Men With The Blues as the album culled from those two performances suggests. More than anything (though) this album is a whole lot of fun to listen to. Hearing both iconic musicians stretch themselves and deliver something bordering on honky-tonk hard-bop (at times) is really enjoyable. Nelson is still a country singer but with the backing of Marsalis’ full quintet, Willie sounds right at home being a jazz band leader. It would have been magical to see the performance, but for those of us that weren’t there, there is this CD and also a DVD documenting Two Men With The Blues.
