Life is a strange and twisting journey and sometimes, as big as the world is, it is can seem really small. Take the Chicago trio White Devil as an example. We know the bass player, Dave, from back in the day where he played in bunches of bands around here. Now I haven’t talked to him in ages; in fact, I think the last time I saw him was outside the Whole Foods store in Wheaton maybe four years ago. Anyhow, Dave plays bass in White Devil (ex-Sleeper & ex-Passenger) and that’s basically the extent of my story. Except that there is the music. Yes, White Devil released a five song EP earlier this year called How To Kill A Lion With A Slingshot that is full of dark and heavy instrumental post-metal. The first song on the EP starts a little slowly and seems a bit directionless but after that kicks into high gear and doesn’t let up until it’s over. White Devil has a sound that is pummeling but not plodding; one that is not as ethereal as Isis and not quite as dexterous as Russian Circles. In other words, How To Kill A Lion With A Slingshot is a solid debut from these guys. It packs quite a punch but won’t knock you out in the first round… not just yet. Supposedly they kill it live and with better production behind ‘em, these guys could kill a full-length too. You can download the EP for free here.
