Late last year I found Will from Sound As Language raving about a young band from Scranton, PA called Tigers Jaw and (no) this isn’t a band featuring Michael Scott, Andy Bernard, Dwight Schrute, and Jim Halpert even though that would be funny. Tigers Jaw is a band that plays raw and rough power pop that borders both pop punk and emo without ever fully crossing either line. In other words, this is more Superchunk than it is The Get Up Kids even though a case could be made for both. The album is full of crunchy guitars but they are more about texture than propulsion; it’s a restrained and almost mellow album but with plenty of catchy melodies. Things do, however, get a tad sloppy from time to time as if the band is hiding a little too much behind their distortion pedals, but rather than being detrimental, it’s mostly endearing. The dual high/low vocal harmonies add another differentiating element to the songs on the record and show some heart-on-sleeve vulnerability. Now, some of my favorite recorded drums ever are on The Promise Ring’s Nothing Feels Good and the drum sound on this record has a simlar cymbal-heavy sound that I really dig. So yeah, this is a great release that seems really short and over almost before it starts. RIYL: Lemuria, Superchunk, Brand New, etc…

I went and sought this record out right away after only hearing moments of The Sung. I’m really digging it.
