Review: The Whipsaws – 60 Watt Avenue

Can you name me any rock bands from Alaska? No, Jewel doesn’t count. Until I heard the rip-roaring rock n’ roll of The Whipsaws, I don’t think I could have done it either, but now that I’ve heard ‘em, I just can’t stop listening to the songs on their latest album 60 Watt Avenue. I can thank ninebullets.net for that. Seriously, this is exactly the sort of record I would recommend to fans of Drag The River, Two Cow Garage, Jr. Juggernaut, Uncle Tupelo, etc… As you might expect from those comparisons, there are a moments of acoustic Americana punctuated with crunchy and twangy roots rock that would sound perfect while you’re teetering on the edge of a barstool after throwing a few too many back. This band would be perfect at The Rose Bowl in Urbana, except that they aren’t a cover band. anyways, 60 Watt Avenuet is 100% awesome and wouldn’t sound out of place on the Suburban Home Records roster. Come to think of it, why the hell wasn’t this on my “best of 2008” list? It certainly deserves to be.
