This ain’t punk so stop reading now. Still reading? Okay. Good. This is the story of how singer-songwriters Steve Tannen and Deb Talan met, started writing songs, fell in love, got married, and had a baby boy named Theo. It is also the story of how these two talented musicians (together) as The Weepies have crafted an honest and beautiful collection of quiet folksy pop songs called Hideaway. Something like (perhaps) John Strohm meets Laura Veirs in the wee hours of the morning.
Hideaway is the second full length from the duo and is (for all intents and purposes) simply more of the same sweetly crafted pop melodies where every single song on this album sounds effortless. Like a sunny summer breeze or balloons against a clear blue sky, there are no rough edges here. Despite beautifully simple instrumentation and layered male/female vocal harmonies, Hideaway is in no danger of making my best of 2008 list; it is very enjoyable just a little too serene. C’mon, I’d lose all credibility if I said I really liked this (even though I do).
