I’ve asked it before and I’ll ask it again; have you ever heard The Sound Of Animals Fighting? Well, the band is a progressive rock band from Southern California and features Anthony Green (of Circa Survive) and three current or former members of RX Bandits (Matt Embree, Chris Tsagakis, and TSOAF founder Rich Balling). After having this in my review queue for some time now (mainly because I wasn’t the biggest fan of their last album Lover, The Lord Has Left Us) all I can say is that this album is borderline brilliant if you like this sort of stuff.
The Ocean And The Sun is still as ambitious as anything the band has recorded, but the songs are better than they’ve ever been and the pairing down of the band back to it’s original four members, give the music room to breathe. There are still atmospheric passages, slicing staccato guitar fills, slight electronic flourishes, and Tsagakis’ frenzied drumming which (along with the huge vocal range than Embree, Green, and Balling can achieve) is easily the single most awesome thing about this album. Find me a drummer better than Chris Tsagakis and I’ll… Anyhow, from the word go, The Ocean And The Sun is a complicated and far-reaching album that should find favor with fans of the edgy prog rock of bands like The Mars Volta and even Coheed & Cambria. It’s visceral, experimental, and hella rockin’ but also (at times) fragile and dreamy. I bet you’ll just love it.
