Review: The Mae Shi – HLLLYH

At one point a few weeks ago I had some extensive notes written that I was going to use while writing this review, but they’ve since vanished so you are (instead) just going to get the short version of this review. The Mae Shi (at least the best I can tell from listening to this album) are fucking crazy lunatics. The songs on HLLLYH sound like the bastard love child of Parts & Labor, Bomb The Music Industry, and The Polyphonic Spree. It is a noisy melodic jumble and really (at least I don’t think so) to be taken totally seriously. The spastic electro-punk features some ridiculous lyrics that prove the group is out of control. It all kinda makes my head want to explode. You probably can’t dance to HLLLYH, but you might be able to flail around uncontrollably. Think of it this way, imagine what melody is and then know that The Mae Shi is what melody in a frypan with some bacon and eggs (and some really good drugs) sounds like. More specificially, maybe like snorting a mixture of cocaine and pixie stix with your morning orange juice.

i LOVED the mae-shi’s first album “terrorbird”. short experimental punk songs that barely lasted a minute. i will admit i was kinda scared when their original singer left the band and the mae-shi covered miley cyrus (see: pitchfork)

HOWEVER, i heard “PWND” and fell back in love. i approve.
