If you read CYSTSFTS with any regularity then you know that we love The Loved Ones (from Philadelphia) and their Americana tinged punk rock-n-roll sound. So the band recently released a new six song EP Distractions via Fat Wreck Chords. The EP features two great new songs in “Distracted” and “Last Call” that find the band continuing to show they ain’t just another run of the mill punk band. Heck, “Last Call” even features some keys played by Franz Nicolay from The Hold Steady. “Spy Diddley” is an outtake from the sessions from the band’s first album Keep Your Heart and it’s totally evident as it is basically a straightforward pop-punk track. The EP also features three great cover songs; Bruce Springsteen’s “Johnny 99,” Billy Bragg’s “Lovers Town Revisited,” and an acoustic version of Joe Strummer’s “Coma Girl.” The most amazing thing about the Distractions EP is just how cohesive it feels. It seems as if The Loved Ones are right on the heels of something big. In fact, I saw The Gaslight Anthem a few weekends ago and singer Brian Fallon remarked, “Remember when we played here with The Loved Ones? Now that’s a good band!” For more reading check out a great piece on The Loved Ones from Coffee Stained Stationary or my reviews of Keep Your Heart and/or Build And Burn.

Now I can’t remember if it was you who turned me onto the Loved Ones but if so, thanks, man! And yes, I really do hope they are on the heels of something big. Their last album made my top 15 of 2008, I’m so happy to hear they’re getting some good press, xoxo
