Okay. What’s up with this? You may or may not know that Florida’s Discount was one of the best pop-punk bands of the mid-90’s. Guitarist Todd Rockhill went on to play in Unitas and The Draft and vocalist Alison Mosshart switched gears entirely and headed to London and changed her name to “VV” and started The Kills with Jamie “Hotel” Hince. Their latest album is called Midnight Boom and it is kinda hard to describe. Maybe elctro-trashy post-punk with both male and female vocals? Whatever you call it, the music played by The Kills is straightforward, sorta lo-fi, and passionately executed. There is certainly a little guitar rock to be had, but with Midnight Boom everything is anchored by the pulsating drum machine beats. I hear hints of everything from Sebadoh to The Pixies and Gwen Stefani to the Talking Heads or Sonic Youth (not that Midnight Boom sounds anything like any of those artists since it’ really doesn’t). It’s too skronky to be purely pop and almost too sexy to not be. What a lovely conundrum.

This came out a long time ago. Why are you just now giving it a review? But everything you said is dead on.
