I just found out a few days ago that my friend and former bandmate Scottie just parted ways with his new band The Get Go because he is focusing on his career as a solo artist in Japan. A little strange but not surprising. In case you haven’t heard ‘em (and actually not many people have) The Get Go consist(ed)s of ex members of Allister, Showoff, Mest, and Home Grown and pretty much sounds exactly how you probably imagine it sounding. I’m not even kidding. Exactly. Their debut album Hello Again (which is as far as I know unavailable here in the States) is full of sugary and super catchy post-Green Day pop-punk-lite that is well-played but a bit aimless.
For every song like “Face Down” or “Weekend” there is a clunker that makes the listener question exactly what he/she is listening to. It’s that unevenness and hit or miss quality about Hello Again that perplexes me. These guys can obviously write a killer tune but when it ain’t good, it’s hella bad. Oh yeah, The Get Go also cover’s the 1984 Rockwell hit “Somebody’s Watching Me” in a way that sounds frighteningly natural for the band just like Alien Ant Farm’s cover of “Smooth Criminal” did. I wish Scott the best of luck with his solo career and the same for Chris and The Get Go guys, but if I had to choose sides, I’d head to Japan.
