Review: Smartbomb – Diamond Heist

Diamond Heist is the debut full-length from Worcester, MA’s Smartbomb and it blazes fast and furious with catchy skate-punk that sounds like a cross of early Fat Wreck stuff (think NOFX) and a bit of melodic hardcore similar to (say) Strike Anywhere. It is fast and (with 12 songs clocking in at under 25 minutes total) over before you know it, perfect for blasting through 3 miles on the treadmill. The band features members of No Trigger and Shock Nagasaki so that might make them cooler to you… or not. My only complaint about Diamond Heist is that two songs in the middle, “PCH (Intermission)” and “In My Dreams” both seem a bit out of place. I can appreciate that Smartbomb was trying to break up the monotony of their punk rock onslaught, but it just doesn’t work. These guys should just do what they do best and knock out fast and aggressive tunes as fast as you can say “Who’s the terrorist now?”
