Shorebirds sounds like a great idea, right? Take Matt Canino from Latterman and Chris Bauermeister from Jawbreaker and put them in a band together and it should be, like, one of the most, like, awesomest things you’ve ever heard, like, totally. Their debut self-titled 7” was amazing, but their single full-length, It’s Gonna Get Ugly isn’t quite that succinct or direct. Instead of sounding a lot like either Latterman or Jawbreaker, this sounds more like Crimpshrine or (even) Fifteen. I’m not complaining, but it just seems a little flat. Maybe it’s because I’m sick and just don’t have a ton of energy right now, but yeah. Shorebirds actually broke up prior to releasing It’s Gonna Get Ugly so (perhaps) this will get better with time and be more appreciated as the one-off sort of project that it unfortunately turned out to be. This is where the review initially sorta ended.
This second paragraph was written after I listened to It’s Gonna Get Ugly one more time. I don’t know what I was talking about before when I said that it seems a little flat. This is some bang-up knock-down gruff and anthemic pop-punk that’s about as good as anything else you’re likely to come across anytime soon. Seriously, don’t take my word for anything. I write stuff and then I change my mind after I read it and tell myself what an idiot I am. Really, based on the aforementioned information of what bands the guys in Shorebirds used to play in and what I think they sound like, you already know if you are gonna even listen to these songs or buy the album… or not.
