Review: Ribbonpigeon – Young Lungs

Here’s another damn great album that I’ve neglected in my “needs a listen” pile for way too long. It’s called Young Lungs and comes delivered to us from Murfreesboro, TN’s oddly-named (but wildly awesome) Ribbonpigeon. There’s the whiskey-soaked warmth of Kent Goolsby’s vocals along with the sublime backing of guitars, fiddles, lap steel, harmonica, and a fairly low-key (but solid) rhythm section. It all adds up to something that reminds me of a less punk and more country (it could be the fiddle) version of The Weight circa Ten Mile Grace. Seeing as how that’s one of my favorite alt-country records ever, you can probably imagine just how much I like this album. My wife also hears a little Rocky Votolato somewhere in there, which is also a good thing in my book. Young Lungs would be a welcome addition to your collection right next to offerings from fellow Tennessee bands like Lucero and Glossary. According to the band’s site, they will have a new record out in early ’09. I won’t let that one sit, no way.
