Review: Reggie And The Full Effect – Last Stop: Crappy Town

I could make all kinds of jokes about the album’s title, but last summer’s Last Stop: Crappy Town is the 5th full-length from Kansas City indie-emo-core popsters Reggie And The Full Effect and isn’t really very craptastic at all, nor is it all that pop oriented. The album was inspired by Reggie’s (James Dewees) trip to rehab and is (thus) darker, more serious, heavier, and a bit more bi-polar than any of his previous efforts. There is still Reggie’s signature emo-pop drenched in thick guitar fuzz and keyboards but overall, this has much more in common with Coalesce than the Get Up Kids (both being bands Dewees has played in).

In fact, if it isn’t going off the deep end in the heavy and chaotic department, much of Last Stop: Crappy Town is slower and keyboard-based which makes songs like “L” sound even more frenzied. I dunno, Dewees sounds frazzled and angry instead of sassy and playful. I’ve always had a place in my heart for Reggie, and while this isn’t Greatest Hits 1984-1987, I still like this album a lot. Sure, it’s stupid and simple and brash and a bit immature (at times) but what it might lack in depth, Last Stop: Crappy Town more than makes up for in authenticity and heart-on-sleeve emotion. If you can’t deal with it then it’s your loss.
