Despite my best attempts to ignore it, I really kinda like Get Young, the sophomore effort from the Boston-based trio Pretty & Nice. It is a manic, insistent, and spazmodical whirlwind of an album that is damn near impossible to not enjoy or (at least) dance your ass around your living room for a few minutes. The band’s sound combines the crazed art-damaged enigma of (say) Of Montreal with the jagged stop-start melodic post-punk of Maximo Park, and the tinny new-wave of bands like XTC and Devo. It’s rhythmically playful and full of poppy energy via the edgy staccato guitar riffs and sneering synth sounds that wedge themselves in the deepest corners of your brain. Not that it’s a bad thing (at least in this case) because it isn’t and you aren’t. For some reason I really want to watch Zoolander right now. Fans of Test Icicles and/or Arctic Monkeys might like this if only because of the faux British accentisms and the catchy melodies. Anyhow, Get Young is the soundtrack for kids waiting for the skinny-tie dance party celebrating the next decade of excess that they may or may not ever see. Interesting indeed. Get Young can be gotten now from the cool Sub Pop founded label Hardly Art.

I find them to be a reincarnation of Madness
I had the same problem. I wanted to not like the band and just leave them along. But I couldn’t.
