Review: Pomegranates – Everything Is Alive

The Cincinnati-based group Pomegranates have, with their debut album Everything Is Alive, given the world yet another poppy indie rock band to keep an eye on. As if I needed that. But there is just something about Everything Is Alive that, despite sounding a bit run-of-the-mill at time, is engaging enough to keep even the most jaded critics (myself included) interested. Pomegranates play fuzzy and poppy indie rock that shares that same under-produced but charming quality that the first two Death Cab records have and (like those albums) show a band that generally plays it close to the vest but isn’t afraid to rock out a little when the time feels right. The quartet also shows off a Brendan Benson like knack for quirky but accessible melodies that owe at least a small debt to classic garage rock. Everything Is Alive, when all is said and done, is a pleasantly enjoyable album with a handful of great moments but (more than anything) has me waiting to hear what the band does next. Pomegranates are full of promise; promise that (hopefully) proves this is just the tip of the iceberg. RIYL: Death Cab For Cutie, Look Mexico, Oh No Oh My, etc…

ok ok, I’ve been trying to avoid this band for awhile now, only because I’m up to my ears in quirky, indie pop. But damn you, you had to go and make it interesting and I clicked on the song…. hooked now! I bet they’re really fantastic live. Thanks for nuthin! xoxo
