My brother introduced me to the Old 97’s years ago and since then Too Far To Care has become one of my favorite records. Heck, when it was time for my brother and his wife’s first dance as a married couple, they chose “Question.” Basically, there is no shortage of love for Rhett Miller and the Old 97’s in our neck of the woods. So when when I tell you that the band’s latest album Blame It On Gravity was worth the four year wait since Drag It Up you should take me seriously.
I’m in the camp of Old 97’s fans that likes their raucous country side much more than their latter forays into jangly pop-rock, but (finally) the band has made a record that seemingly balances those two tendencies without selling any of their fans short. The alcohol-fueled barn-burners are juxtaposed nicely against pop songs, but everything is infused with just enough country twang to know that these alt-country vets are still true to their roots. Who knew that 15 years in the Old 97’s would still be going strong?
