Chicago’s own Oceans play that sort of epic (mostly) instrumental post-rock that’s closer to any sort of plinky Midwestern instrumental emo you might fondly remember from the 90’s than it is to instru-metal bands like Pelican and their peers. I only make that comparison because their new album Nothing Collapses is driving and forceful without being the least bit heavy. I like the album, but not every song begs to be the focal point of my evening and that’s OK. Still, songs like “Terrified Of What We Might Become” are mesmerizing in places; easy to get lost in and distracted from the task at hand. Other songs pull your attention in, but bleed into the background and one can only wonder how much energy it would take for Oceans to make the whole thing spellbinding. Writing about instrumental music (for me at least) is a lot like listening to it; unless they are really (truly) great and awe-inspiring, without more melody pulling them along, many songs can easily get tiresome. That being said, on Nothing Collapses, buoyant melodies abound so we’re covered. I’d suggest checking this out if you like Explosions In The Sky, Tristeza, The Promise Ring, etc… Get it now from Copper Lung Records.
