Just like they seem to have done about every other year, NOFX have released a new album and this one is titled Coaster and it is their 11th. Did you hear that Fat Wreck Chords is now pricing all CD’s at $10 or less? This is the first new release with that pricing. It’s hard to believe that the band has been around since 1983 but as someone who has been listening to NOFX as long as I’ve been listening to punk music (and that’s a long time), all I can say is that NOFX knows exactly what they do well and has been doing just that for fucking ever now.

Coaster is a solid but not groundbreaking album, but really, what did you expect? For the last 25+ years, Fat Mike, El Hefe, and two dudes named Eric have been playing punk rock with gusto. And while they haven’t been writing the same song over and over all these years, it’s all still a little political, a little crass, and a little/lot drinky. My favorite NOFX album is 1997’s So Long And Thanks For All The Shoes but since I’m fan but not a die-hard, really, it’s all just NOFX to me.

As you’d expect, Fat Mike sings about religion, drinking, lesbianism, drinking, and does it with humor while El Hefe’s guitar is on fire. There is even one point in “My Orphan Year” where he gets all sentimental on us. But, really, if 4 guys in their 40’s can still (after all these years) play with this much piss and vitriol with smiles on their faces, there’s hope for the rest of us yet.
