For full disclosure and truthfulness, Amy and I are friends with the guys in New Found Glory. But even though we have known them for years and own their albums neither of us has really been excited about anything that New Found Glory has released recently. Not that their last few albums were bad for the radio-friendly pop-punk that they were, but ehh… The NFG we know (or at least former Shai Hulud vocalist Chad Gilbert does) comes from hardcore roots so it is really refreshing to hear the band’s new EP Tip Of The Iceberg. It contains three NFG originals that more closely resemble Nothing Gold Can Stay more so than the sugar-coated mall-core that made the band minor stars. The EP also contains three classic hardcore covers by Gorilla Biscuits, Shelter, and Lifetime. While not perfect, this EP shows New Found Glory doing what they do best without the major label constraints that plagued their last few records.
So if the six NFG songs weren’t enough, the EP also comes with Takin’ It Ova the debut from the International Superheroes Of Hardcore. ISHC is (for all intents and purposes) exactly the same band as New Found Glory but with the aforementioned Chad Gilbert on vocals, NFG vocalist Jordan Pundik on guitar, and Steve, Ian, and Cyrus playing the same instruments they play in New Found Glory. ISHC knocks out old-school hardcore jams that would sound legit if it weren’t for the ridiculous lyrics about their hatred of screamo, wearing your seat belt, swearing, Marty McFly, eBay, and more. It’s a joke, but it’s hella funny and made funnier because the music isn’t jokey at all. I’m still laughing.
