Even though when I’m asked who my favorite bands are I don’t usually name Minus The Bear, I probably should. I’ve come to realize that I actually listen to them quite a bit. Now Minus The Bear is a band that sounds like no other. Their smooth and slinky mathy indie/prog rock is instantly recognizable and has been the soundtrack to many drives home in the wee hours of the morning for the wife and me. But with a remix LP and (now) an acoustic EP (simply called Acoustics) Minus The Bear are not strangers to reexamining and reworking their existing material. Their new Acoustics EP features a new song and a few old favorites played, well, acoustically with nary any shredding guitars or atmospheric effects to be heard for miles. And while it really isn’t hard to imagine some of the songs stripped down like this, the songs sound natural and (perhaps) tighter than on the proper albums. Acoustics doesn’t find Minus The Bear pushing themselves, but rather shows the band’s remarkable consistency no matter how they perform their material.
