Review: M83 – Saturdays=Youth

Last night I was holed up in my basement writing and listening to the latest album from the a French electronic group M83, Saturday = Youth, and was (at least somewhat) mesmerized in the moment. I recently hooked up a new set of speakers and a subwoofer in our basement office and the bubbly and atmospheric electro-shoegauze [sic] of Saturdays = Youth sounded amazing. The sounds of M83 (singularly, Anthony Gonzalez) still feature the lush synth tones of previous albums, but Saturdays = Youth is (overall) a much more open and airy album. Additionally, the band incorporates the crystalline vocals of one Morgan Kibby and show a more pop oriented side that recalls a synthy trip down memory lane reminiscent of 80’s groups like Cocteau Twins and Simple Minds. Can’t wait to check ‘em out tomorrow night at Bottom Lounge here in Chicago. I’ll also be swinging by Metro to check out The Acorn. See ya there
