Review: Look Mexico – Gasp Asp 7″

Look Mexico is from Tallahassee, Florida and while I’ve listened to their full length, This Is Animal Music, and their compilation of older tracks, The Crucial Collection, I was never really all that impressed… until now; until I heard the songs on the Gasp Asp 7”. Is this even the same band? Well, I know it’s the same band, but (wow!) how they’ve refined and awesomized their sound. With smooth vocal melodies, twisting and chiming guitar lines, buoyant basslines, tumbling and intricately pounding drums, this is the moment where Look Mexico steps it up a notch and shows us what they’re made of. The songs are focused, complex, and seem to twist and turn in exactly the right direction at exactly the right moment but also have a layered and lush sound thanks to keys, added percussion, and even some slide guitar. It is a totally melodic experience but one that introduces bursts of controlled chaos to the mix as well. This is a near-perfect EP of indie-emo-post-rock-whatever that does exactly what all 7” records should do; it has you flipping it over and over and over. Highly recommended for fans of groups like Minus The Bear and American Football. This was released digitally by Lujo Records but released on 3 different colors of beautiful vinyl by the wonderful dudes behind Tiny Engines. In fact, this is the first release from the label and (if it is any indication of their attention to detail and quality) I can’t wait to hear what’s coming next.
