Review: Lanterns – Apocalypse Youth EP

It seemed like I was listening to a lot of bands from San Diego for awhile but then (BAM!) nothing. Lanterns are the latest band from the sunny shores of San Diego, California to have found a home in my record collection and damn do they make me wish it was summer. They have a nice and fuzzy indie pop sound that’s just about perfect for this bitter Midwestern cold spell. Their 2008 EP Apocalypse Youth combines distortion and bouncy melody in a way that almost makes me think of Evan Dando fronting a solo-less Dinosaur Jr. covering their favorite songs from MBV’s Loveless. I dunno. It isn’t really that complicated; just good indie pop songs that are quirky and angular without becoming obtuse. Stay classy San Diego.
