King Tuff’s …Was Dead is currently blasting from my speakers as if they are possessed. Filled with the primal urges that make rock and roll the devil’s music, these thirteen songs are a bit confounding but certainly not complicated. In all honesty I found this album to be completely annoying at first, but midway through my first listen I was sorta hooked by the crazy garage rock. The drums, bass, and rhythm guitars are simple and straightforward while the blues leads are sloppily frantic. It’s like The Ramones, Brendan Benson, The Raspberries, and Clap Your Hands Say Yeah all rolled into one but totally not like any of that. Retro as if scooped straight out of the 60’s rock revolution but somehow way too crazy to be anything but wholly modern. There is a fuzzy rawness about …Was Dead that is only magnified by the far-out vocals and the vintage organ sounds that pepper the album. The album is on The Colonel Records who also released another of our favorite albums of 2008. It also turns out that King Tuff himself is none other than Kyle Thomas of Witch and Feathers and Joesph Plunket plays bass is his touring band. Cool.
