Review: Ken Vandermark & Paal Nilssen-Love – Seven

I’ve been a fan of Chicago-based saxophonist Ken Vandermark for many years but this album finds him at his most explosive. Seven is the third album by Vandermark and percussionist Paal Nilssen-Love from Oslo and it is one of the most exciting things I’ve heard in a long time. Seven is filled with raw and captivating free jazz that has a energy a beauty that is unlike just about anything I’ve heard lately. Vandermark’s high pitched squawking and snorting low-end sax bursts are matched in intensity by the counterpoint of Nilssen-Love’s furious drumming. The duo’s improvisation can be brutally intense but is also playful and exhilarating.
