Way back when I downloaded Jai Agnish’s song “How You Dream” (from his 2000 album Automata) and put it on a ton of mixes back then. I listened to that song a lot but then sort of forgot about it and Jai Agnish until recently when I got an email from the New Jersey based singer/songwriter about his third full-length album Awake When You Dream. So when I listened I heard his familiar layered vocals, but most (if not all) the electronic flourishes that populated his earlier releases was gone. It was less electro-acoustic folk-tronica than it was just stripped-down indie folk songs. The results are pretty cool. Armed with basically just his computer, his trusty Gibson J-45 acoustic guitar, and a 1980’s Roland synth, Jai Agnish’s easy harmonies and playful melodies slowly unfold over the course of the album’s 11 songs and make Awake When You Dream an enjoyable listen.
My 3 year old daughter and I were sitting at the dining room table
coloring and listening to Awake When You Dream last week and she even started singing along to some of the songs. Not nearly as complex/layered/experimental as hi earlier material but, here, Jai
Agnish proves that he can be just as good when he keeps it simple. Check it out via free digital download right here.
