Review: Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey – Lil Tae Rides Again

With a band moniker like Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey, I wasn’t really sure what to expect from Lil Tae Rides Again so I was very pleasantly surprised that this didn’t sound at all like what I had expected. Unfamiliar with the group’s previous work I was able to listen to Lil Tae… with fresh ears. JFJO (at least on this record) don’t play jazz in the traditional way you might expect.

Lil Tae… was put together by electronic producer Tae Meyulks who took the performances of keyboardist Brian Haas, bassist Reed Mathis, and drummer Josh Raymer and chopped ‘em up, deconstructed, and remixed them into a cunning marriage of acoustic sounds and digital manipulation. Is it jazzy hop-tronica or is it post-rock-infused indie-jazz? Yes. At various points along the path that Lil Tae… treads, the JFJO incorporate everything from electronic soundscapes, TNT-esque post-rock, warped hip-hop, and improvisational jazz. Some melodies flutter in and out of focus like a twinkling star while other times dense texture collages slam through chopped drums and atmospheric synth pulses.

All in all Lil Tae Rides Again is an adventurous and highly enjoyable album and definitely a welcome addition to my iPod.
