Review: Ida – Lovers Prayers

Ida Lovers PrayersWe here at Can You See the Sunset love Ida. Ida also happens to have a brilliant new record called Lovers Prayers that was just released today by the fine folks at Polyvinyl Records. It is a hauntingly gorgeous and achingly delicate record that showcase Ida’s uniquely modern brand of folk music. The crystalline vocal harmonies are lush and dreamy like walking through a dew-covered evergreen thicket in the early morning as sunshine glistens on the pine boughs. Ida’s slowly mesmerizing melodies and sparse arrangements sound so much bigger than the sum of their parts. Perhaps it is the trickle of subtle dissonance that floats right beneath the surface or maybe it is simply because Ida is a phenomenally great band who (in my book at least) can really do no wrong.

It may be in part because Amy and I had a chance to meet Elizabeth Mitchell and Dan Littleton when they played a children’s concert at Ravinia last summer and after briefly speaking with them realized not only are they both amazing musicians, but wonderful people as well. Do yourself a favor and buy Lovers Prayers right now.

Huge Ida fan, I’m surprised to see the lack of love for them in the blogosphere. What’s the deal? I guess since they aren’t young and fresh, and won’t produce a lot of hype, no one wants to cover them.
