Poke my eyeballs out if the vocalist for Head Of Femur doesn’t totally remind me of an exact cross between Chris from Ruth Ruth and Matt Pond. Go ahead, poke ‘em! Head Of Femur’s latest album Great Plains is a quirkily enjoyable slice of multi-instrumentalized indie-pop straight outta Chicago. But it’s good; good like a toasted PBJ sandwich. Just imagine the fairly straightforward melodic bent of Matt Pond PA crossed with the raw-quirkiness of early Flaming Lips or TMBG stuff and you might be onto something.
Against all odds, Great Plains has managed to wedge itself into some part of my brain that makes me keep playing it over and over. I mean, I’m not exactly the biggest fan of this sorta stuff and some of it seems self-indulgent, but I still like it a whole bunch. Even when Head Of Femur seemingly crams every instrument they can into just about every open space, they somehow pull it off. They make ambitiously overstuffed indie-pop a whole lotta fun so…
If yr in Chicago and you have the opportunity, head on out to Schubas tomorrow night (that’s Friday) and catch Head Of Femur live with The Heavenly States. It should be a good one. I’ll be there too so say hi.
