Review: Ghost Buffalo – The Magician

Denver, Colorado’s Ghost Buffalo just released their second full-length, The Magician, on the always fab Suburban Home Records and the band has abandoned some of the alt-country tendencies that hung about their 2006 debut album. Instead, the band has shifted their brand of post-hardcore to a heavy alternative-y sorta sound. Think Far, Quicksand, or even Centaur with the stingingly bittersweet vocals of (say) Sarge’s Elizabeth Elmore.

Contrasting the striking vocals of singer/guitarist Marie Litton, Ghost Buffalo also features former Planes Mistaken For Stars guitarist Matt Bellinger and his huge near-metal riffs. It makes for a dense listen where dark pop influenced verses juxtaposed with thunderous choruses. More alt-rock than post-hardcore this time around Ghost Buffalo still manages conjure up a lumbering roar and that’s fine by me.
