Review: Forest Fire – Survival

The first lyric on Forest Fire’s latest album Survival finds Mark Thresher singing, “I make windows.” It’s kinda fitting because I make windows… or at least I know and work with people that make windows. Perhaps the company can adopt it as their theme song, or perhaps not. Just imagine a cross between Red Red Meat and Modest Mouse except with acoustic guitars. Survival is full of loose and ramshackle indie Americana that’s intentionally noisy and bursts out in a full-fledged sentridoh most of the time. While not exactly lo-fi, Survival is decidedly raw but with enough slight melodies and distant flourishes of pedal steel to keep your interest. If Birdmonster fought the Animal Collective for a place in the Pavement hall of fame, this is what it would sound like. Of course, only if it was recorded in a dilapidated cabin on the Lower East Side. Survival is out now on Catbird Records.
