Review: Drunken Boat – Drunken Boat

I like drinking and I like boats. So if my logic is correct I should like the Portland band Drunken Boat, right? Yeah. I like ‘em. You might like their self-titled album if you are a fan of bands like Cleveland Bound Death Sentence, Banner Pilot, and/or Mariah Carey. Just kidding about the whole Mariah Carey thing, I meant to say East Bay punk a la Crimpshrine. So what exactly does a drunken boat sound like? Well, Drunken Boat features a gruff voiced boy and a gravel throated girl singing along to gritty lo-fi pop punk that probably sounds 300% better on vinyl than it does on my iPod. You know exactly what I mean and if you don’t then why are you even reading this? But yet for all the rough edges here, there’s a lot of melody; snotty sloppy melody. Hopefully though, (The) Drunken Boat(s) (I think they also may have changed their name) will have a new record out soon since this one is a few years old and I’d love to hear more.
